GET TO THE HEART OF IT ALL...eDowntown Update       Dec. 15, 2006

A note from Sherry

Vice President of Downtown Greensboro Inc.

With less than 10 days before Christmas some of you may be stressing a tad. With work getting in the way of holiday shopping you are probably concerned about getting those last minutes gifts.

Downtown Greensboro is the fourth downtown I’ve worked for over the last 17 years and I’ve always made it a goal to see how much of my shopping I can do in the downtown district. Mall shopping or big box shopping is my last resort. For one thing, the holiday season shouldn’t be about stressing myself out over getting gifts, and for another shopping in my downtown district is so much more pleasant than going to the big box shops. Here are some suggestions that I hope will make your shopping experience  pleasant!

Sherry’s gift ideas from downtown Greensboro:

1.    Food - I love eating out and the perfect gift is a gift certificate from a downtown restaurant and we have MANY to select from! Go to www.downtowngreensboro.net, click on the interactive map to view how many restaurants we have downtown – you may select gift certificates from a number of them.

2.    Pamper your loved ones – with a gift certificate from a salon or spa, there are quite a few places to select from, look under Services on the interactive map and check out the listings under Beauty Salons.

3.    Stationery – gift boxes of stationery is always nice or even nice blank note cards for those “thank you”  notes that should be written – O’Kennedy’s now stocks a great selection of Cranes stationery and cards, AND you can personalize.

4.    Accessories – there are quite a few shops that have accessories – there are over 70 places listed on our interactive map under retail and accessories. Some of my favorite accessories include jewelry, antiques, clothing accessories such as scarves, hats, ties, pins – we have places where you can find these within steps of your office – again visit our interactive map to find a location nearest you!

5.    Art – if you have someone who loves art on your list then downtown certainly is the place – whether its fine art such as original paintings or if they love pottery, handmade jewelry and other fine crafts, downtown Greensboro is the location for these items. There are 43 places where you can find something to satisfy your art lover – remember that the Cultural Arts Center is home to several art venues as well as the Museum Shop at the Greensboro Historical Museum.

6.    Theatre – With the Carolina Theatre, Triad Stage at the Pearl Theatre, and Broach Theatre all downtown, season tickets or tickets to a particular show makes a great gift!

7.    Baked goods – I love homemade baked goods, but I confess – besides not being the best baker I often don’t have time to hone my baking skills, but why bother with places like Cheesecakes by Alex, Ganache and Simple Kneads – let them do the baking for you!

8.    Coffee or Tea – that’s a good gift for me – I am a coffee fiend and we have several places where you can either get gift certificates for coffee/tea or purchase the actual coffee and tea as gifts; places such as The Green Bean, Dulce Aroma, Cafe Europa, and Calhoun Specialty Brew Bar.

9.        For the Children – Toys & Company has toys that are sure to satisfy even the pickiest child from train sets to stuffed animals, games and more.  Don’t drive to that big box toy store when you can get something special right downtown; the Museum Shop and Bargain Box also have  items for children too.

10.   Fashion – there are 15 places to find something to suit that fashion conscious person – check out the website www.downtowngreensboro.net; go to the interactive map, click on Shopping – the best thing about shopping downtown is the customer service – our downtown retailers will give you the BEST customer service and many offer free gift wrapping or gift packaging!

11.   Grasshopper fans – need I say more? Season tickets or items from the Grasshopper souvenir/gift store the Hoppers Yard.  Hurry, as the Hoppers Yard will be closed from December 21 thru January 3, 2007.

12.   Stocking Stuffers – when I was a child my favorite stocking stuffers came from the drugstore downtown – downtown has two drugstores where you can pick up those last minute stocking stuffer items such as candy, gum, cough drops (hey – it is the cold/flu season).

13.   Don’t whine about the shopping you have left just go get wine! Wine makes a great gift and you can purchase wine from Zeto’s or Metro Gourmet Market, both offer items that compliment wine too. Or give a gift certificate to The Press, a wine bar and restaurant.

14.   ONE LAST THING – really – in case you haven’t gotten a tree yet – you can purchase one downtown – go to the McGee/Elm Street Parking lot and Delancey Street, a non-profit organization with a focus on a two-year re-educational program, has fresh  beautiful trees from the mountains of NC!

Many downtown venues offer great gift ideas, visit our interactive website or just take a stroll downtown.

Happy Holidays!

NOTE:  Inclusion should not be construed as a recommendation, but merely as a guide.
