In ten days it will be Christmas Eve. I don't know about you, but I'm often influenced by the commercialism of the holiday season and yet every year I challenge myself to give thoughtful gifts, unique gifts, and not stress out over gift buying. While I recognize that there are places outside of downtown offering items you can grab on the run I want to remind you that downtown offers you options – thoughtful, unique options and by buying locally you are contributing to the community.
In the next ten days I challenge you to consider doing the rest of your shopping downtown and that shopping includes giving to charitable organizations as well. DGI's office is in the Self-Help building and all the tenants represent non-profits. There are agencies within this building who would appreciate a charitable contribution toward their cause. Did you know that every time you purchase an item from The Bargain Box you're helping the community? The Bargain Box is located on the ground floor of the Self-Help building, 122 N. Elm Street and since 1947 has helped fund almost 3 million dollars worth of community projects. On DGI's website www.downtowngreensboro.net click on the interactive directory then onto services then non-profit (or use NEW search engine). There are 41 non-profits within our downtown district (and there may be more who aren’t even listed).
On the more commercial side of holiday shopping - DGI has listed 15 participating downtown merchants who have pre-wrapped items for sale ranging from $4.95 - $70.00. Check out the selections at our website. If you have friends who enjoy good food, downtown has some of the finest restaurants (49) in all of Greensboro and nearly all offer gift certificates. Consider giving theatre tickets to one of several downtown theatre venues.
So before getting in your car and heading toward other shopping destinations consider downtown where you can also contribute to the community while finding unique, cool and often one of a kind items. I’d be remiss if I didn’t remind you that you can also contribute to the United Arts Council, the Greensboro Children’s Museum, the Greensboro Historical Museum (they have a great gift shop too) and the International Civil Rights Museum who all contribute to downtown by their presence!
Happy Holidays to YOU – take a breath and enjoy the season for what it’s supposed to mean! Again, that website is www.downtowngreensboro.net. (The former radio announcer in me just had to add that last promotional line).
