LATEST NEWS

DGI President Ray Gibbs last day with DGI was June 1, 2007.  He started with DGI in 1999, under his leadership downtown 275 residential units have been built, 485 units are under construction, $175 million of development has occurred, approximately $100 million of new development is underway, and downtown now generates an estimated $2 million in new property tax revenue that is projected to double by 2009.

Key to the City: Former President Ray Gibbs was honored with the Key to the City by Mayor Holliday at his Appreciation Celebration held on Thursday, May 24 at the Kress Terrace for his eight years of service to downtown Greensboro. Mr. Gibbs has been instrumental with revitalizing our Center City with his guidance, visionary leadership and roll up sleeve attitude that has been an integral catalyst for downtown.

Along with the Key to the City, the DGI board of directors and staff honored Ray Gibbs with a bronze sculpture created by Ernie Rich, Jim Cooper and Erik Beerbower of Lyndon Street Artworks reflecting his visionary work at the drafting table and a scroll of just some of the many projects under Mr. Gibbs tenure that were made a reality.

DGI started with one full-time staff and one part-time staff with a budget of $100,000 in 1999 and has grown to four full-time staff, one part-time, and subcontract services of 8 full-time staff for a total budget of $1.2 million. Mr. Gibbs will be pursuing the private sector as of June 1, 2007 and may be available for consultation during transition.

Thank you Ray for eight years revitalizing our downtown!

DGI was honored recipient of The Chief's Award for leading the effort in developing the downtown area as a prosperous and vibrant urban center and enhancing the safely appeal of the downtown area, which encourages citizens to spend more time and dollars with downtown businesses and our Center City.
