Treat your Valentine to an Experience Downtown!

Next week is Valentines and if you're like me - yikes! Last year I offered Valentine suggestions to hopefully encourage you to get with the program and do something more exciting than picking up a box of stale chocolates from a drugstore along with a card at 5 p.m. after work. This year and in no particular order are my Valentine ideas:

1.    Theatre tickets: currently playing at Triad Stage and on Valentines, Mrs. Warren's Profession. For an early Valentines, go to one of my favorite movies at the Carolina Theatre,Breakfast at Tiffany's  playing on February 12. You also can think ahead and get tickets for Intimate Apparel running February 27-March 8 at the Broach Theatre. For a present that lasts all year, buy season tickets for all the plays downtown! For more information on theatres downtown visit our website's interactive directory theatres

2.    Don't whine about not finding the right bottle of wine for a romantic dinner, head to Zeto's where Penny and Sue can help you select the perfect wine to go with that perfect meal that you're preparing  read more

3.    Make reservations to have dinner at one downtown's many fine restaurants, view the many restaurant choices available downtown restaurants.

4.    New downtown: Triad Glided Tours; get a different view of downtown with a tour from Triad Glided Tours. Tours take place on a Segway, and your tour can be customized to suit your plans read more

5.    23rd Annual Heart Gala: If you really want to impress your "sweetie" yet help many people out with this gift, get tickets for the 2008 Guilford Heart Gala, being held on February 16 at the Empire Room, 203 S. Elm. Sleeping Booty is the featured band and your ticket goes to benefit the American Heart Association. If you can't attend make donation in honor of your Valentine. read more

6.    Pamper your sweetie with a gift certificate from one of downtown's salons or spa's just click on to beauty, fitness or health to find the place that is perfect for your loved one. fitness & health | beauty salons | therapeutic massage and bodyworks

7.    Sweets are always good and downtown offers fresh homemade treats prepared by local people rather than a factory hundreds of miles away. Check out Cheesecakes by Alex, Ganache, and Simple Kneads.  Consider coffee or tea from Basketdoodle, Manny's, Green Bean, Dolce Aroma, and Calhoun's Specialty Brew Bar. bakery | coffee houses & cafe

8.    Flowers are still romantic: Clemmons Florist and the Farmer's Wife can put together the perfect bouquet. florists

9.    Jewelry: Downtown has many places where you can find something unique including traditional, fine jewelry from Bryson's Jewelry and Schiffman's to Gregory's Jewelry to shops that carry locally made items like Just Be, Lyndon St. Artworks, Winterfire, and restaurant Thai Pan. jewelry | gift shop

10.   For budget conscious, but a true romantic, go to Central Library and check out a book of poetry then pack a picnic lunch or supper and head to Center City Park. library | CCP

A new voice is expanding to Greensboro, and women are taking notice. Skirt! magazine launches in March 2008!  The magazine, a hybrid of national and local content, started in Charleston, S.C., in 1994 by Nikki Hardin, who remains its publisher.

"Skirt! is a magazine for women, about women," says editor Nora Shoptaw. "It's a mix of feminism and fashion, essays and culture, shopping and saving the world. It's a little bit of everything."  The look is driven by bold graphics, lots of color and big, big pages.  The advertising targets an upscale consumer.

To celebrate the launch, skirt! is throwing a party! Win door prizes. See a skirty fashion show. Enjoy music, mingling, toasts and fun fare. Check out the first Greensboro issue the day it hits the streets!
