LATEST NEWS | A Crash Course in Entertainment at Triad Stage Bloody Blackbeard is the centerpiece of the third annual THTR 232, Triad Stage and UNCG Theatre’s collaborative summer festival. In addition to the main stage run of Bloody Blackbeard, UNCG Theatre will stage family-friendly matinees of Redbeard’s Revenge: A Child’s Musical Dream of Pirate Adventure on the main stage. Part comedy club, part hilarious theatre, Mere Mortals by David Ives consists of five ferociously fast and funny short plays. Performances of Mere Mortals are on Friday and Saturday nights, June 20 – July 5, after the curtain goes down on the 8:00 pm performances of Bloody Blackbeard. Mere Mortals is appropriate for ages 18 and up, all tickets are $10, general admission, and limited to 80 seats per performance. 
Redbeard’s Revenge: A Child’s Musical Dream of Pirate Adventure: Danger and adventure were simply not proper ambitions for the girls at Miss Peavey’s Academy for Polite Young Women. But ambitions change when Maddie and her friends find the journal of the infamous pirate, Redbeard. Filled with the spirit of adventure, they hold secret meetings on “pirate-ness.” Redbeard’s Revenge is appropriate for ages 4 and up. Performances are June 18–20, 24–27 and July 1–4 at 10:00 am and June 21, 28 and July 5 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $7 for adults; $6 for children, seniors and students; and $5 for groups of 10+. New boutique at Hamburger Square | | New women’s clothing store, S & L Boutique, held its grand opening on Friday, June 13 at 121-D West McGee Street. The shop caters to small girls, teenagers and women and sells items such as tops, pants, shoes and handbags in a variety of lines including Citizens of Humanity, Seven Jeans, True Religion, LTB and Blue 2. Owner and operator, Mike Tarpley, who also owns a similar clothing store in Manhattan, New York, moved to North Carolina seven years ago and recently saw an opportunity to expand his business in the Greensboro area. “Locating in downtown Greensboro enables me to take advantage of the growing downtown market and cater to my preferred clientele”, Mike says. The boutique is a welcome addition to downtown retail options being one of eight retail clothing shops. The shop is open Sundays offering another option for downtown weekend shopping.

The Idiot Box will kick-off North Carolina’s biggest stand-up comic contest, the Ultimate Comic Challenge runs now to July 25, 2008. Dozens of comedians from across North Carolina will compete for the title of the Ultimate Comic and a total of $1000 in prize money. In addition, the finalists will be invited to participate in a special stand-up comedy night in the Fall, which will feature the winner, the Ultimate Comic. There’s 6 weeks of competition. All shows will be at 10pm on Fridays on the following dates: 1. June 13 - Round 1 2. June 20 - Round 1 continued 3. June 27 - Round 2 4. June 11 - Round 3 5. July 18 - Round 4 6.
