NC Storyfest and Greensboro Bicentennial’s

Parade of Decades and Birthday Party!

 

1. NC Storyfest, Grammy-award winner, David Holt, Greensboro native, “Logie” Meachum and others tell “Greensboro Stories” at NC Storyfest on May 17 in the Cultural Arts District of downtown Greensboro.

 

1a)  Preview Party: Friday, May 16 from 5–9pm evening and showcase spine-tingling collections of ghost stories. (admission)

 

1b)  Storytelling Workshops: Saturday, May 17, 8:30am; workshops for adults/kids looking to enhance art of storytelling. (admission)

 

1c)  Storytelling Concerts: Saturday, May 17 starting 1:00pm for all ages beginning directly after the Bicentennial Parade, FREE and open to public.

2. Parade of Decades will celebrate 200 years of Greensboro's history and look to its future. The parade will begin at 11:00am at N. Greene and Lindsay and end at Church and Lindsay near the Children's Museum and Greensboro Historical Museum. Elements will include marching bands, neighborhood groups, historical characters, and much more.

 

3. Following the parade, a Birthday Party will take place in Center City Park located at 200 North Elm Street. This event will feature a birthday cake and entertainment. Both of these events are free and open to the public.

May 10, 2008: In the spirit of National Peace Officer’s Week (5/10-5/17), which in part honors officers killed in the line of duty, the Greensboro Police Department has partnered with the Greater Greensboro Merchant’s Association and North Carolina Special Olympics to host the 18th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial 5K to benefit special Olympics. The race is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 and will begin at 8:30am at Governmental Plaza on Greene Street (Map it).

Host of NC’s popular TV program, Folkways, David Holt; comedian and  musician, Andy Offutt Irwin; author of the newly released book, Long Ago Stories of the Eastern Cherokee, Lloyd Arneach; and 2007 Parents Choice  Award-winner, Donna Washington will teach storytelling workshops for

adults and kids looking to enhance their personal art of storytelling or for those who simply would like an introductory course.

stories in our own lives and how

to craft them into tales.

           

Workshop B: Donna Washington

Development of Character Voices &

Sound Effects in Storytelling

Every Child has a Story

Learn how to utilize the gift of family as a guide to workshop, teaching youth storytelling.

Using Humor and Personal Stories in Storytelling

Join Andy in this hands-on workshop.

NC Storyfest will host a PREVIEW PARTY on Friday, May 16 from 5–9 p.m. Headliner David Holt, and regional storyteller, Cynthia Moore Brown, will host the evening and showcase their spine-tingling collections of ghost stories at Festival Park. 

 

Laurelyn Dossett & Friends will provide musical entertainment as well. The party is for all ages. Preview Party passes cost $10 per person or $25 per family. At 9 p.m. there will be a Story Blues Cabaret with Bump and Logie.  Admission to the Story Blues Cabaret is $5 (or free if you purchased a Preview Party pass). Take advantage of on-site food and drink vendors including beer and wine or visit one of the 45 places to dine in downtown Greensboro before or after the show!

North Carolina playwright Ed Simpson’s Periphery at the Greensboro Historical Museum. The play runs May 14-18 and highlights the historic events surrounding the Woolworth's sit-in on February 1, 1960, underscoring how the “Greensboro Four's" heroic actions affected a diverse group of ordinary Greensboro citizens.  Student admission is now free! Made possible with the support of the Lincoln Financial Foundation.

Greensboro Preservation is celebrating Preservation Month with the following exciting events:

 

Wednesdays in May 2008: 11am-2pm: FREE Tours of Blandwood Mansion:  Tour Preservation Greensboro’s flagship house museum and see the restored main building and the two reconstructed dependencies, the law office and the kitchen of the home of former NC Governor John Motley Morehead.

 

Sunday, May 11, 2pm: “The Plants and the Planted”, $5.  Tour historic Green Hill Cemetery and hear about Greensboro’s famous citizens and the rich landscaping that surrounds them.  Meet at the southern-most gate on Wharton Street.  Tour lasts about 1.5-2 hours.  Proceeds benefit Greensboro Parks and Recreation Cemetery Division.

 

May 14, 7pm, Downtown: Walking Wednesdays, FREE Guided Tours of Greensboro’s Historic Neighborhoods. Meet at 7pm at the Green Bean, 341 South Elm Street.  Find out why architectural historians consider Greensboro to be the best-preserved “big city” downtown in the state, with a special focus on modernism.

 

May 26 – June 20: Bicentennial Archeological Dig at Blandwood (information soon forthcoming).
