Here’s a quick rundown of upcoming activities.

 

Hospitality Training:  Are you interested in knowing more about downtown Greensboro? If so, DGI is offering hospitality training classes. The training is for workers who come into contact with both out-of-town and local visitors.  The next class will be Thursday, July 24 from 3-5:00pm Suite 609, 122 N. Elm St. (Self-Help Building). A walking tour is part of the training so wear comfortable shoes! To register, contact 336-379-0060, ext. 21, $5 fee, seating is limited.

 

 

Stage

 

 

City Arts Drama Center presents Once Upon A Mattress, the musical tale of the Princess and the Pea. Don't miss the antics of a Queen who doesn't want her son to get married and a kingdom that can't get married until he does. Fun for the whole family. Presented by The Livestock Players and Greensboro Children's Theatre along with the 3rd Stage Theatre Co. at Weaver Academy Theater, 300 Spring Garden Street.  July 11-July 20, 2008, Fri-Sat 7:00pm and Sun 2:00pm. Special Events

 

 

The unique bluegrass inspired quintet, Steep Canyon Rangers, and original acoustic music phenomenon, The Greencards, will kick off the highly anticipated EMFfringe Series in two diverse and daring performances on Thursday and Friday, July 10 & 11, 2008 respectively.   Greensboro’s premiere alternative rock series, the EMFfringe Series will feature a total of 12 performances over the festival’s 5-week duration.  Both concerts begin at 8:30pm at Greensboro’s Triad Stage (232 South Elm Street, Greensboro).  Purchase tickets for $20 at 866-579-TIXX, from the Festival Box Office at Triad Stage or online at www.EasternMusicFestival.org. Carolina Theatre’s NEW Summer Film Festival runs now through August 17 with themed nights.  Tickets are only $5.00. Enjoy a movie downtown in historical grandeur with modern Dolby sound. This week the series includes:

Ultimate Comic Challenge resumes for round 4 of competition this Friday, July 11.  Dozens of comedians from across North Carolina will compete for the title of the Ultimate Comic and a total of $1000 in prize money. In addition, the finalists will be invited to participate in a special stand-up comedy night in the Fall, which will feature the winner, the Ultimate Comic.  All shows will be at 10pm on Fridays at the Idiot Box, seating is limited and reservations strongly recommended. Round 5 of the challenge is set for July 18. The Greensboro Children’s Museum has daily specials of Bee Boppin Busy Bees Monday, Tuesday Tunes, Workout Wednesday, Art Connects Thursday, Fantabulous Fridays, and Family Fun Friday Nights. The museum will also host special events this week:

 

·     Friday, July 11, 6pm: African Drumming and Dance Performance

Children and families will enjoy this entertaining show of African drums, dance and music by the NC Dance Project!  This performance will surely get your feet moving and put a smile on your face!  Free with admission or membership.

 

·     Thursday, July 17, 11am: Flame & Ember’s Summer Safety Show

Flame & Ember (the Firefighting Clown and Dalmatian) make a special visit to GCM to put on a puppet show about summer safety.  Kids can learn how to be safe while doing all of their fun summer activities! Free with admission or membership.

 

Weekly Wednesdays: This Wednesday, July 16 features free music from the David Via (bluegrass) From 1:45am–1:15pm at Center City Park.  Music every Wednesday through October 29.
