What’s Up Downtown

Downtown Greensboro Inc.

 

 

Mellow Mushroom is OPEN at 609 S. Elm Street.

 

Pizza and sub restaurant, Mellow Mushroom, opened last week the historic South Elm District of Downtown Greensboro at 609 S. Elm Street.

 

The expansive and inviting open space has a dining capacity of 185 and features concrete flooring, four-seater table tops, bar seating with a view to the kitchen and ornate chandeliers hang above from the warehouse-high ceilings.

 

Mellow Mushroom is known for its pizzas. The crusts are made with spring water and whole wheat flour.  Diners can choose from base options like pesto and barbeque, and add toppings from an extensive options list like tofu to turkey that is divided into categories of fruit & veggies, proteins and cheeses. The pizza shop is also fully stocked with 36 beers on tap including the entire line of beers from Downtown microbrewery, Natty Greene’s, and wine and spirits are available at the full service bar.  The new Downtown Greensboro location is a second venture for owners, Jim and Cindy Waters who also own the Mellow Mushroom located in Downtown Winston-Salem.  For hours of operation, and more info, click here.

Celebrate NEW YEAR’s EVE 2009

Many downtown restaurants and nightclubs are offering specials, here’s just a few:

 

Laugh in the New Year at The Idiot Box, recent winner of Best Comedy Club in the Triad, breaks in the New Year with a unique show packed with comedy improv, sketch, and stand up comedy.  The Idiot Box will host the 6th annual Idiot Box’s New Years Eve Comedy Bash. Includes light hors d’oeuvres; 21 and over please, smoke-free facility.  Tickets $30 can be purchased by calling (336) 274-2699.  Located at 348 S. Elm Street

 

Pizzeria L’Italiano is open until 3:30am and is offering $2 slices of cheese pizza and $2 domestic beers.  Located at 219-B S. Elm Street.

 

Solaris, celebrates the New Year with specials or choose from the menu is open at 5pm with seating until 10pm. Solaris now offers TAPAS PLUS, seven full course entree dinners daily on our menu as well as the Chef's Platter every weekend and New Year's Eve. New Years Eve Bash at The Rhino Please Welcome (Greensboro based band) will be playing for New Years Eve The Rhino. $10 cover at the door that is good for all night. The community is invited to a self-guided tour of local art galleries and studios, museums, retail shops, restaurants and alternative arts venues beginning the First Friday of the New Year, January 2, 2009.  From 6-9pm, many of the participating locations will host special events, promotions and demonstrations and some venues may offer extended hours past 9pm and refreshments.

 

Dozens of downtown restaurants will also be open offering regular hours.  The newest addition to the center city is the organic pizza shop, Mellow Mushroom at 609 S. Elm St.  Be one of the first to experience this pizza sensation. 

 

First Friday, a once-a-month event Downtown that will continue through 2009 on every first Friday of every month from 6-9pm.

The Greensboro Children’s Museum will have the following activities this week:

 

·   Kids on the Ball & Wee Little Kids on the Ball Program: Tuesdays, 3:30pm Wee Little Kids on the Ball (ages 3-5 yrs)  Tuesdays, 4pm Kids on the Ball (ages 6-10 yrs).  This program gets your kids moving in a fun way using kid-sized exercise balls!  Activities and games focus on a variety of fitness disciplines including balance, coordination, strength, cardio, and flexibility. No pre-registration necessary. Free with admission /membership.

 

·   Family Fun Friday Nights: Friday Nights, 5-8pm GCM welcomes all families to the Museum on Friday nights for a night of fun.  GCM discounts admission on this night to $3 (half-priced) to increase accessibility of all families.

 

·   Elementary Engineering LEGO/K’NEX Workshop: Saturday, January 3, 1-4pm Spend an afternoon with LEGO and K’NEX building creations from your own imagination or from a kit.  Students in 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade are invited to join in the fun!  Participants are asked to bring a healthy snack and juice/water that day.  Spaces are limited. $25 per child. Call 574-2898 today.
