Accelerating The Momentum

Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI) presented the fourth annual Report to the Community on Thursday, September 18 at The Empire Room.  President Ed Wolverton and chairman of the board Bruce Cantrell, gave an overview of downtown’s progress, upcoming projects, Annual Report, unveiling of Strategic Plan and what to expect in the upcoming year.  Chester Brown, former chair, dedicated meeting in honor of board member Jim Roach. 

 

Keynote speaker Bill Carstarphen recounted success stories on public and private partnerships for rail design and redevelopment of urban environments.

Downtown Leadership Award

 

John Lomax (not present) was honored with the 2008 Downtown Person of the Year award and Ray Gibbs with the 2008 J. Edward Kitchen Downtown Leadership award.

 

DGI’s Annual Report and Stratigic Plan are in the process of being mailed to property and business owners.

Obama and Biden to visit downtown Greensboro on Saturday 9/27 at J. Douglas Galyon Depot.  Crowds are expected in the thousands. Please check Road Alert below for road closings! Doors open at 10:00am, all attendees must pass through metal detector. Speech is scheduled for 12 noon.

Last Sunday for Bluegrass at Blandwood! This Sunday 9/28 features Music That's Making History with David Via and Andy Eversole with Special Guests from 2pm-5pm. Bring your chair or blanket and relax on the shady backyard.  Enjoy Natty Greene’s, Grove Winery, and Stamey’s. ArtQuest of Greensboro will provide activities for kids.  Tickets at door $5, children 12 and under are free.  More Info

A Rainbow of Quilts

 

The Piedmont Quilter’s Guild presents “A Rainbow of Quilts” from 9/26 to 9/28 at the Downtown Marriott. The quilt show will feature traditional and contemporary works by the guild and quilt enthusiasts. Visitors are expected from across the state and as far away as Florida. Show hours are Fri-Sat 9:00am-6:00pm, Sun 9:00am-4:00pm. More info  www.piedmontquilts.org

Triad Stage presents its first theatrical production in the new UpStage Cabaret with the bloodsucking thriller Dracula, Preston Lane’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. Dracula runs September 25 through November 1, 2008.  All seats $18 More Info

1st Annual Salsa, Beach, and Swing Blowout:  Professional dancers to perform Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Swing, and more.  A la carte appetizers, full bar, door prizes! Fur Ball at The Empire Room:  The most important night of the year for homeless animals. The Annual SPCA of the Triad FUR BALL. All the proceeds from this year's Fur Ball will go to the SPCA of the Triad Foster and Adoption Program and CARES, the Triad's only program providing support to families who need help with food or veterinary care for animals in distress. Saturday 9/27 6:00pm to midnight, tickets $100.  More Info

Sunday in the Park at Center City Park on 9/28 with performance by Thacker Dairy Road (2:00), followed by Martha Bassett (3:30) along with Political Information Day. Over 20 political candidates will be there to seek your vote and a perfect opportunity to learn about the issues and the bonds. Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Non-partisan judges, and representatives for various bond campaigns will be present.  ArtQuest table available for kids to make art projects and musical instruments. Event runs 2-5pm.  More Info

Virginia Grimes Heads To The New Downtown Greensboro Headquarters

 

Carolina Bank will celebrate the grand opening of its new downtown Greensboro headquarters branch on Saturday 10/4. Committed dignitaries for the 11:30am ribbon-cutting include Greensboro Mayor, Yvonne Johnson, Carolina Bank President, Bob Braswell, as well as Greensboro Chamber of Commerce representatives. In addition to Bank President Bob Braswell, other dignitaries will be invited to speak just prior to the cutting of the ribbon. ROAD ALERTS

 

GDOT, The City of Greensboro and DGI would like to inform you of the following:

 

Streets surrounding the J. Douglas Galyon Depot will be closed at 6 pm on Friday, September 26. Additional streets will be closed beginning at 6am Saturday, September 27.

 

Planned street closures will affect the blocks of:

 

·   Davie Street and McGee Street

·   Davie Street and Washington Street

·   Davie Street to Market Street

·   Washington Street from Davie to Lyndell

·   Church Street from Washington to Market

·   Lyndell Street to Market

·   Hughes Street from Church to Lyndell

·   And adjacent properties as directed by US Secret Service, based on crowd size

Closures should affect traffic patterns from 6am Saturday through 3pm. Traffic may be congested in the area through 6pm.
