The second annual Bluegrass at Blandwood series starts this Sunday, 9/13 with three consecutive Sundays, 9/13, 9/20, and 9/27. Live local and regional bluegrass music will perform on the front lawn of the Blandwood Mansion from 2:00-6:00pm. Concerts include 9/13 features Steel Magnolia and Polecat Creek, 9/20 features Nutbush Ramblers and The Carter Brothers, and 9/27 features Family Eversole with David Via and Greensky Bluegrass. Free interactive children’s activities are being offered by ArtQuest with the musical spirit of crafts such as hand-made instruments from recycled materials, tall hats, folk dolls and animals and dancing puppets.  Additional activities for various ages will be offered each week. All proceeds benefit Preservation Greensboro Incorporated.

 

Admission is $10 for adults, children 12 and under are admitted free. Concessions from Angie’s Italian Water Ice, Natty Greene’s beer, Grove Winery, Cheerwine,  and others will be available as well as souvenir t-shirts and other items for sale. The Blandwood Mansion and the Museum Shop will be open during each Sunday concert for FREE tours. Parking is available on the streets and parking lots surrounding Blandwood Mansion. Please make plans to bring blanket, chairs and your family and friends to the season of Bluegrass at Blandwood. No coolers or glass containers allowed. All dogs must be leashed at all times.

Downtown Greensboro Inc.’s annual Report to the Community will be held on Thursday, 9/24 from 8:00-9:30am at the Carolina Theatre. (Light breakfast at 8:00am/ presentation starts at 8:30am).

 

Celebrate Center City’s accomplishments over the past year and learn about new projects that will keep Downtown the center of our area’s growth in the future.  Help us recognize this year’s recipients of the Ed Kitchen Leadership Award and Jim Roach Downtown Person of the Year Award and welcome guest speaker, Erik Henry, an active advocate for going green and Downtown revitalization.

Central portal for nanotechnology and nanoscience in the North Carolina Triad area

 

As part of its public meeting series Getting Things Done in Greensboro, Action Greensboro will hold a discussion of Higher Education as an Economic Engine tonight, 9/10 from 5:00pm–7:00pm at the Empire Room (203 S. Elm St.) The meeting will highlight current research efforts and explore the economic opportunities for Greensboro and the Piedmont region resulting from collaborations between our local research institutions.

The Center for Visual Artists hosts its 4th annual summer art camper exhibition and celebration, Dirty Fingernails on Saturday, 9/12 from 12:00pm-4:00pm at the Greensboro Cultural Center, 2nd floor. This event is free and open to the public for all ages. Parents will have an opportunity to see their child’s artwork in a gallery setting and receive information about enrichment programs offered this fall. Find It

Triad Stage opens its 2009-2010 Season “A Season Together” with its main stage play Picnic, William Inge’s portrait of life in the American heartland. It’s a peaceful time for a quiet Kansas town in the early 1950s and summer is drawing to a close with the excitement of the annual Labor Day picnic. A Pulitzer Prize-winning drama where passions turn one small community upside down. Picnic runs now through 9/27. Find It | Map It

You need more drama at The Broach,” with Gulf View Drive, the third play in Arlene Hutton's Nibroc Trilogy. The trio of Hutton's plays ends with the time frame moving from World War II to 1953. 5 by O. Henry at the Greensboro Historical Museum. Enjoy the anxiously anticipated return performances of 5 by O. Henry from 9/11 to 9/20. The Deuterman Law Group is sponsoring a food drive to support the Second Harvest Food Bank. The Second Harvest Food Bank provides food for some 680 programs including soup kitchens, homeless shelters, halfway houses, domestic violence shelters, and Meals-On-Wheels. Please drop off canned goods at the Deuterman Law Group located at 317 S. Idiot Box ushers national cult phenomenon to Greensboro with 'The Room' on Thursday 9/17 at 7:30pm. The Idiot Box teamed up with the Carousel Luxury Cinemas for a trio of monthly screenings of “The Room.” Combining the film with live entertainment and audience participation, this unique experience promises to be the best way to enjoy what might possibly be the worst movie ever made. Performances also on 10/15 and 11/19. Tickets $10 each and include one free beer or soda and a handful of plastic spoons to be thrown at the screen during specific moments in the film. The Greensboro Children’s Museum hosts NEW 2500 square foot traveling exhibit, “How People Make Things” from 10/03 to 12/31, an exhibit inspired by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.  Additional information soon forthcoming.

 

Congratulations to Riva’s Trattoria for recent Guilford County Restaurant Report Card score of 101.5 (A++) located at 257 N. Greene Street. Find It | Map It

 

Work began this week on five-story building at 324 S. Elm Street in adjacent parking lot. The mixed-use project will encompass 25,000-square-foot building and include a two-story restaurant. Construction of the building is anticipated to begin within the next three or four weeks and take approximately ten months to complete.

 

A new restaurant is planned to open late Spring 2010 at 324 S. Elm Street in the new five-story multi-use development called Bin 33 by chefs Robert Pearse and Trey May. The restaurant will seat 200 and focus on casual dining and reasonably priced medium and high-end wines.

 

Scooternerds anticipates grand opening of new showroom sometime soon. 

 

Bee Jazzie, a new retail boutique anticipates opening sometime in September specializing in shoes, purses and accessories at 121-A W. McGee Street. 

 

The Sweet Shop, Homemade Poundcakes By Margaret anticipates opening sometime this month located at 631-A S. Elm Street.
