Public Art - Greene Street Parking Deck Moving Ahead, the Cemala Foundation in conjunction with the United Arts Council presented the City with “Moving Ahead,” a public art piece embedded into the Greene Street Parking Deck that focuses on the evolution of transportation in the Triad on Friday 8/21. “Moving Ahead,” created by NC artist Ron Fondaw, adds color, movement and beauty to the Greene Street Deck. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Three Downtown businesses partner to raise funds for the children-focused hospice program, Kids Path, on Friday 8/28 from 5-9pm. Mary Contrary, Chakras Spa and Simple Kneads Bakery transform the shared alleyway between 227 and 229 S. Elm Street into a courtyard party with entertainment provided by Ben Jensen’s Jazz Trio. Enjoy refreshments donated by several downtown eateries and free outdoor chair massages from Chakras Spa staff. A percentage of venue sales made throughout the evening will be donated to the non-profit program. Entrance into the event is FREE. Smithsonian Summer Saturday, join the celebration of North Carolina's musical heritage at the Greensboro Historical Museum on Saturday, 8/29 from 2:00-5:00pm. The Cemala Foundation and the Greensboro Public Library present the 2009 Smithsonian Institution Affiliate music program with free musical performances by The Hushpuppies at 2:00pm, the Apple Chill Cloggers at 3:30pm, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops at 4:30pm. A nonperishable canned good donation to Greensboro Urban Ministries is requested in lieu of an admission fee. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Meredith Seawell Gorham and Family Built to Overcome Obstacles (BOO): Fundraiser featuring live music by Junebug & Illusion to benefit Meredith Seawell Gorham as she recovers from a massive stroke and serves as an inspirational example of a woman who has overcome many obstacles. Little Miss Triad, a talent competition for girls ages 5-10 will be held on Saturday & Sunday, 8/29 & 8/30 at the Greensboro Cultural Center presented by The Community Theatre of Greensboro (CTG). Sidewalk construction at intersections GREENSBORO, NC – August 18, 2009 – SIDEWALK WORK IN PROGRESS at Downtown Intersections for Signal System Replacement. Greensboro Department of Transportation (GDOT) reports that work is currently underway to modify traffic signal control cabinets in the downtown area. The purpose of this project is to modify the concrete bases to accept new control cabinets which will be installed as a part of the computerized signal system upgrade. Sidewalk removal and replacement will be necessary at several locations. The current project phase will involve work at 30 intersections downtown and will continue for approximately two months. The overall project will replace the entire system including installation of new controllers at each signalized intersection citywide as well as an extensive fiber optic communications network. Pedestrians and motorists are asked to use caution when walking and driving in these areas. |
