The 3rd annual Women’s Symposium: Pathways to Abundant Living will be held at Central Public Library on Friday, August 22, from 9:30am to 4:30pm.  The diverse and talented presenters were carefully chosen to bring powerful messages to participants.  Tickets $70, price includes a full day of delightful sessions and lunch. The Greensboro Children’s Museum continues daily specials thru the month of August with Bee Boppin Busy Bees Monday, Tunes and Tales Tuesday, Workout Wednesday, Art Connects Thursday, Fantabulous Friday, and Family Fun Friday Nights.  FREE with membership, admission $6.00 per person (Adults/Children 2yrs+), under 1 yr (Free), Seniors/Military ($5.00/person).  

 

Summer Music Series celebrates Sunday in the Park this Sunday, August 24 from 2-5pm at Center City Park.  A great way to spend Sunday afternoon!  Bring your family and friends for a fun, free, family day with music entertainment by Trail Mix (bluegrass ) at 1:30pm, EIGHTwentythree with special guest Roger Martin at 3:00pm, and Jam Session with High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association from 4:00-6:00pm.  Enjoy kid’s crafts, games and activities on the lawn and the tranquil fountain. 

 

Hear's My Story: Senior Voices in Greensboro runs through August 31 at the Greensboro Historical Museum.  Eight UNCG students interviewed 25 seniors at the Greensboro Senior Center to gather stories and photographs that are the centerpiece of this exhibit. Enjoy topics of food and cooking, personal memories of events and how technology affected their everyday lives.  A project of UNC Greensboro's Public History Program, led by Dr. Benjamin Filene, made possible by the university's Dept. of History, Office of Leadership & Service Learning, Greensboro Historical Museum, and North Carolina Humanities Council. Event is free and open to the public, museum hours Tue-Sat 10am-5pm and Sun 2-5pm.

 

Every Week, Every Wednesday:  This Wednesday, August 27 features free music from Clay and Benjy from 11:45am–1:15pm at Center City Park.  Music every Wednesday through October 29. 

 

Global Horizons: Fair Trade in Asia: Thursday August 28 at 7pm at Central Library 219 N. Church Street.  Joelle Nealy, manager for Greensboro’s Ten Thousand Villages will discuss the benefits of fair trade and talk about recent trip to Asia, meeting with three artisan groups, and how working with a fair trade company has affected their lives. Free event, for more information call (336) 373-3617.

Ever want to run through town and pretend you are a Supehero? Now’s your chance with Hoppin’ Fun Superhero Run on Saturday, August 30. The race starts at 5:00pm (registration at 3:30). Enjoy the race and take in the Grasshoppers baseball game afterwards. This race will also feature the Best Superhero Costume Contest for adults and kids! Mark your calendar Sunday’s in September for Bluegrass at Blandwood “Music That's Making History” from 2pm-5pm. Bring your chair or your blanket and sit on the shady backyard as you listen to nationally recognized Bluegrass music and enjoy southern delicacies such as Stamey's Barbecue, Natty Greene's beer, Grove Vinyards wine, and Cheerwine! The eighth season of Triad Stage, themed A Season of Spirit, opens with performance Night of the Iguana, an American Classic by Tennessee Williams starts August 31 and runs through September 21, 2008. Individual and season tickets are on sale now, for more information, visit www.triadstage.com.

 

For the first time in its 21 year history, the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society’s Blues Challenge will be split into two separate competitions; one for solo/duo acts, and one for bands.  The solo/duo contest will take place downtown on Sunday, September 7 at the Flatiron Club, 221 Summit Avenue at 2:00 pm.  (The band competition will be held on October 12 at different location). The winning act in the solo/duo competition will represent the PBPS in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, February 4-7, 2009.  Also, the first place act will receive a paid booking at the Asheboro Fall Festival, to be held in October.  There will be cash prizes for runner-up and third place.  All blues performers who would like to enter the solo/duo competition of the PBPS Blues Challenge can register on line at www.piedmontblues.org.  There is a $20 entry fee per act.

 

2008 CROP Hunger Walk is planned for Sunday, October 19.  Help Greensboro become the #1 CROP Walk in the country!
