What’s Happening DOWNTOWN Greensboro June 26 thru July 4 Here’s a quick rundown of upcoming activities. A crash course in entertainment at Triad Stage, there’s something for everyone with three different productions: 1) Bloody Blackbeard, North Carolina’s infamous adopted son was a daring blend of terror and gallantry weaving tunes and tales together and uncover the mostly true and totally thrilling history of the pirate called Blackbeard. Performance runs through July 6. > JULY 4 SPECIAL: Triad Stage invites everyone to celebrate their inner pirate on July 4 with the Bloody Blackbeard Pirate Independence Day 2 for 1 special ticket offer for July 4 8:00pm performance. Some restrictions apply. Tickets are subject to availability and are not applicable to previous sales. Ticket prices are $30–$42. 2) Mere Mortals, a late night comedy by Theatre 232 consisting of five ferociously fast and funny short plays at Upstage Cabaret, appropriate for ages 18 years and up. Friday and Saturday nights through July 5, after the curtain goes down on the 8:00 pm performances of Bloody Blackbeard. Doors open at 10:00pm each night. All tickets are $10, general admission, and limited to 80 seats per performance. 3) Redbeard’s Revenge, A Child’s Musical Dream of Pirate Adventure: Danger and adventure were simply not proper ambitions for the girls at Miss Peavey’s Academy for Polite Young Women. But ambitions change when Maddie and her friends find the journal of the infamous pirate, Redbeard. Filled with the spirit of adventure, they hold secret meetings on “pirate-ness.” Recommended for ages 4 and up. Performances are June 24–27 and July 1–4 at 10:00am and June 28 and July 5 at 2:00pm. Round 2 of 6-week competition of the Ultimate Comic Challenge, Friday June 27, 2008 at the Idiot Box. Dozens of comedians from across North Carolina will compete for the title of the Ultimate Comic and $1000 in prize money. Finalists will be invited to participate in a special stand-up comedy night in the Fall, which will feature the winner, the Ultimate Comic. Showtime 10pm on Friday at the Idiot Box, 203 S. Each screening is a set of films different from the others with a total of over 40 local short films. The winning team in each city will be invited to attend the Filmapalooza Awards weekend and will go on to compete in second round competitions with the winning 48 Hour film of 2008 to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Family Business features two literary masterpieces by North Carolina writers at the Broach Theatre 6/25 to 6/29. Jill McCorkle's Crash Diet and Randall Kenan's The Foundations of the Earth, both stories share an emotional resonance about families and the relationships within them. Both humorous, Ms. McCorkle's central character is "dead on" as she responds to the emotional upheaval that comes with the break-up of a marriage; Mr. Kenan's is totally authentic as he struggles with the social and religious implications of homosexuality. Weekly Wednesdays: This Wednesday, July 2 features free music from the Tracey Thornton (steel drums) from 11:45am–1:15pm at Center City Park. Music every Wednesday through October 29. The Eastern Music Festival is in its 47th season and draws outstanding faculty, distinguished guest artists and talented youth from all over the country and world to Greensboro. Recognized for its commitment to education, the Festival unites world renowned performing artists with pre-professional students to create an environment that fosters musical growth and provides a 5-week schedule of 100 high caliber concerts and music related events. The Festival also produces a popular fringe series, Eastern Music Festival Fringe Series, of alternative programming, featuring everything from Americana to alt country, blues, jazz and gospel with many of the concerts to be held downtown.
