The 5th Annual BB&T Beach Music concert series begins May 22 and will be held every Thursday through June 26 from 5:30pm-8:30pm at Festival Park. Some of the top headliners in beach music will set your toes to tapping this summer. Family-friendly event with tickets for $5, children under 12 free. Last year’s concert series drew more than 10,000 people and raised over $50,000 to benefit NC Children’s Home Society (CHS). CHS is North Carolina’s leading resource in adoption and foster care with the mission to promote the right of every child to a permanent, safe, and loving home. TOP 10 THINGS I’LL MISS ABOUT DOWNTOWN | By DGI Vice President, Sherry Adams: 10. Central Library – I just love all those free books and also discovered dvd’s of books on tape. These are a great listen on the way home from work. 9. The free festivals and being a part of these. 8. Center City Park - just relaxing in the park during lunch and seeing the children running around and playing; couples picnicking; and listening to music on the days concerts are in the park. 7. Strolling down the streets and looking at the variety of architecture. 6. Grasshopper baseball. 5. Coffee – downtown has the best and several options. 4. Baklava, hamburgers, deli sandwiches, ice cream, She Crab Soup, martinis, wine and beer – all from downtown! 3. Center City Resource Team officers. 2. Clean and Green Team (you guys are great – thanks for making my job easier). 1. All the lovely people I’ve met over the last two and half years – especially the DGI staff. Ms. Adams is leaving DGI due to her husband taking a position in another city. Her last day is set for May 30, 2008. We wish Sherry and her family the best in their new endeavors! |

Elm Street featuring authentic Jamaican food. Let your taste buds come alive! The menu features: Curry Chicken Jamaican Style, succulent chicken marinated in tropical spices and other herbs. Sautéed and simmered in a tasty Jamaican curry sauce. Jerk Chicken served in a hot/mild jerk marinade. Grilled to perfection and served with a flavorful light brown jerk sauce. Island style Brown Stewed Fish, filet of red snapper or Tilapia cooked to order. Escoveritched Fish, red snapper cooked in a savory vinegar and garlic sauce with onion rings, carrot strips, and colored bell peppers. Mark your Calendar! Center City Council Committee Meeting will be held Tuesday, June 3 from 7:45 to 9:00am at Greensboro Merchants Association, 225 Commerce Place. This council hosts a monthly breakfast forum to bring local government officials, city departments, preservationists, development organizations, and downtown business people together for information sharing, support and programs pertinent to downtown. Enjoy a relaxing Sunday in the Park, May 25, with Kummba African Dance and Drumming (2:00-3:00pm) and Warren, Bodle and Allen, one of central North Carolina’s favorite folk rock/bluegrass band (3:30-5:00pm) at Center City Park.
Congratulations to Greensboro Chamber of Commerce 2008 Business Award recipients: Women in Business, Sandra Carlton Alexander owner of Greensboro Scenic Tours; Retailer of the Year, Schiffman’s Jewelers (co-winner); and Broadcast Media: Channel 13, The City of Greensboro. Preservation Greensboro celebrates PRESERVATION MONTH with the following exciting events downtown: Wednesdays in May: 11am-2pm: FREE Tours of Blandwood Mansion: Visit Greensboro’s flagship house museum and see the restored main building and the two reconstructed buildings. The house served as the law office and home of former NC Governor John Motley Morehead. May 27 – June 20: May 27 – June 20: Bicentennial Archeological Dig at Blandwood. The work will examine the back quadrant of the Blandwood property, bordered by McGee and Edgeworth Streets. Daily digging will occur Monday-Friday from 8:30am-2:30pm. Two Family Days are scheduled for June 7 and 14, 9am-12pm. Volunteers are invited to come and see how archeologists work.
