LATEST NEWS

The urban greenway kicked off groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, March 7 for the first segment of the Downtown Greenway.  The first phase of the greenway will run about a third of a mile from Freemen Mill Road through Greensboro College to S. Eugene Street.  The first phase was awarded to S&S Building and Development, a $1.3 million contract, and is anticipated to start mid March.  The 4.8 mile path of 10 foot wide asphalt will encircle downtown and,

·     stands alone as the only North Carolina city that will have an urban trail that encircles downtown;

·     pass through more than a dozen neighborhoods and includes stretches through park like green spaces, along the path of old railway tracks and safely alongside city streets and sidewalks;

·     forms a hub that will help connect the 80-plus miles of city greenways and trails that already exist and connect to a broader network of trails and parks, including statewide efforts such as the Mountains to the Sea Trail.

The entire project is anticipated to cost $26 million and be completed by 2016. If you are interested in this exciting project, visit www.downtowngreenway.org.
