Special Events

 

 

Making Connections 'Autism Night' on Thursday, 2/18 from 5:00-7:00pm at the Greensboro Children’s Museum (GCM). All families affected by autism are invited to play and enjoy the museum’s exhibits after hours. Event is co-hosted by GCM and the Autism Society of NC, Guilford County Chapter. Free admission.

 

2010 Exposure Photo Biennial now through Friday, 2/19 at the Greensboro Cultural Center. A juried photography exhibition featuring works by emerging and established photographers selected by juror Leah Sobsey, a nationally recognized artist and educator.  Located at 200 N. Davie Street.

 

The Brand New Life will be performing original world jazz funk at The Green Bean on Friday, 2/19 at 9:00pm. Located at 341 S. Elm Street.

 

Edit Your Space & Accessorize at Bricolage on Saturday, 2/20 at 10:30am. Marc Derro of Editspace Redesign will show you how to make your bookcases, shelves and tabletops tell your story and look great using the stuff you already have. Participants are encouraged to email or bring a photo of problem bookshelves or tabletops for discussion. Admission $18. Located at 716 W. Market Street.

Lincoln Film Series, Abraham and Mary Lincoln: a House Divided (2001), Part 3 (60 minutes). A PBS production at the Central Library on Tuesday, 2/23 at 6:30pm.  In conjunction with Forever Free, a traveling panel exhibit that reexamines President Lincoln’s effort toward the abolition of slavery during the Civil War. Free and open to the public. Located at 219 N. Church Street.

 

Booklovers Social at the Central Library on Wednesday, 2/24 (check date) from 6:30-8:30pm.  Vote for your favorite books of 2009, meet fellow book enthusiasts, and find out about book clubs and see displays of upcoming hot new book titles. Goodwill Fashion Show hosted by Goodwill Industries of Central North Carolina will be held on Thursday, 2/25 at The Empire Room at 5:30. A cocktail hour and runway to show how Goodwill makes it work on and off the runway.  Tickets in advance are $35.00, at the door $40.00. La Revue Negra: The Josephine Baker Story from Thursday to Sunday, 2/25-2/28 at the Greensboro Historical Museum.  In celebration of Black History and Woman's History Month, Actress Ashanti White's one-woman review shares the story of the life and accomplishments of Josephine Baker. She is an actress, dancer, poet and published, Ms White has been hailed as the Zora Neale Hurston of her generation. This continuing partnership with Drama Is Life Productions, Inc., the talented group that brought us "Simply Langston, the life and work of Langston Hughes" last February also heralds the return of Mr. Bill Alston's popular 5-piece jazz ensemble accompanying Ms. White.  Tickets $5 at door. Spirit Horses featuring the watercolors of Vicki Johnson at Winter Light Gallery now through 2/28. Johnson's current show is a collection of colorful horse watercolors. Free and open to the public. Located at 410 Blandwood Avenue. More info.

 

 

 

Theatre

 

 

Around the World in 80 Days main stage performance at Triad Stage runs from Sunday-Sunday, now to 3/07. Jules Verne's classic tale springs to life in this clever, fast-paced comedy for the whole family. This whirlwind odyssey that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to unexpected end. Fun for ALL ages. Ballet Folklorico de Mexico at the Carolina Theatre on Saturday, 2/20 at 8:00pm. In 1952, Amalia Hernández founded the Ballet Folklórico of México on a quest to rescue the dancing traditions of Mexico. Her search became a need to show the beauty that started with the pre-Colombian civilizations and grew with the Hispanic influences of the Vice royal era to the popular strength of the Revolutionary years, all through dance. Auditions for 60 Years or Broadway at The Community Theatre of Greensboro’s on Tuesday, 2/23 for ages 13 and older from 7:00-9:00pm. (Play will run from 4/16-4/18 at the Carolina Theatre). Opportunities available for soloists, group numbers, scene work and narration. Whether you are interested in making a cameo appearance or being part of the whole show. Flamingo Court By Luigi Creatore at The Broach Theatre from Wednesday to Saturday, 2/24-3/06. A three part “slice of life” follows the nosy and endearing residents of a South Florida condo community and will have audiences laughing at the truth they see in what might be their own neighbors - only zanier. The three acts in this comedy reveal a different condo with a new story and new lesson, a hilarious three character piece that starts with smiles and grows into an audience-howling ending. The Sunshine Boys by the Community Theatre of Greensboro runs from Thursday to Sunday, 2/25-3/07 at Greensboro Cultural Center. See one of Neil Simon’s best comedy performances, Al Lewis and Willy Clark played vaudeville as a team for 45 years, but a personal feud has kept them apart for 11 years. An opportunity to revive their act on a CBS "History of Comedy" special sparks a reunion that has you rolling in the aisles. Located at CTG’s studio theatre (4th floor). Kids

 

 

Around the World DAY FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY on Saturday, 2/20 from 10:00am-1:00pm.  A FREE event for young children and their parents, in celebration of Around the World in 80 Days. Activities include mehndi hand-painting, hat-making, passport creation and postcard designing, taking picture while riding a cartoon elephant, decorating a large train engine, and interactive music and movement sessions based on transportation. Each child will also receive a small globe souvenir. Throughout the event, there will be performances in the MainStage Theater from local cultural dancing troupes, hosted by City Arts, and the Triad Stage staff will demonstrate some of the theater magic used in Around the World in 80 Days.

 

The Greensboro Children’s Museum (GCM) offers weekly programs such as Busy Bees Mondays, Workout Wednesdays, and Family Fun Friday Nights, as well as special programs. The Greensboro Children’s Museum (GCM) annual Kickoff to Kindergarten Parent Days has been RESCHEDULED for Monday, 3/1 from 11:00am-1:00pm and 5:00-7:00pm at GCM (not on Monday, 2/22 as originally planned). This free drop-in event is open to the public and was created to help parents prepare for their child’s first day of Kindergarten.  The event is co-sponsored by community partners. Located at 220 N. Carolina Model Railroaders, Inc. (CMR) is Greensboro's oldest model railroad club. CMR has served the Triad with over 34 years of model railroad experience. The Greensboro Central Library at 219 N. Church Street this week includes: AARP Tax-Aide and the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, assistance in preparing your tax return every Tuesday and Thursday from now to 4/15 from 9:30am- 4:00pm. AARP Tax-Aide Program is for low & middle income taxpayers, especially those 60 and over.  No appointment necessary; first come, first served; and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) on Saturdays from now to 4/10 from 9:30am-12:30pm (not available February 13 or April 3).
