First Friday, the public is invited to experience Downtown's creative community on Friday, 2/05 from 6:00-9:00pm. This event features new and original arts and crafts, artist meet and greets, participatory workshops and special event, Around Downtown in 80 Minutes, a fast-paced scavenger hunt around Downtown (weather permitting). First Friday is an open house opportunity to discover the center city¡¯s local artistic community support of locally-owned, independent businesses Downtown. Through this event, DGI encourages folks to invite new friends and visitors to come down and explore our Center City. How fast can you do Downtown Greensboro? Get Downtown for a great adventure on Friday, 2/05 from 7:00pm-8:20pm and observe the fun and exciting tradition of The Amazing Race in Around Downtown in 80 Minutes. 2-person teams have just 80 minutes to visit as many Downtown destinations as possible and collect valuable points along the way. Civil Rights Film Series features Frederick Douglass (50 minutes) at the Central Library on Friday, 2/05 at 7:00pm. A portrait of the self-taught orator, writer and abolitionist who was born a slave in the South and made a brave escape to the North. An early proponent of women's rights, he campaigned for equal rights for all people and served as America's first African American statesman. Free and open to the public. Located at 219 N. Elm Street. Embodiment Exhibition Opening Reception, the Green Hill Center for NC Art invites you to the opening reception of the Embodiment exhibition on First Friday, 2/5 from 5:30-9:00pm at the Greensboro Cultural Center. The featured North Carolina artists offer a wide range of approaches to the visual representation of the body. Through arresting multimedia installations, photographs, and sculptural works in clay, fiber and metal, visitors will be able to explore changing conceptions of the body, and how a sensorial experience informs a psychological state. Musical Moods, treat your Valentine to a special evening at the annual dinner and concert on Saturday, 2/06 at The Empire Room at 6:30pm. The evening starts with a welcome glass of champagne and hors d'oeuvres followed by the opening of three lavish buffet stations offering tempting selections of dinner choices, mouth watering desserts and coffee bar. Dinner music will be provided by the new soul duo myoozik4theSoul and feature performer Walrus will rock the house, playing everyone's favorite party sounds from the 60's through today. Raffles and a silent auction. The event is hosted by Sanctuary House, a recovery and rehabilitation program for adults with serious and persistent mental illness. Tickets $65 per person. The seemingly innocent spirituals, as the slave songs came to be known, were more than simple hymns of endurance and a belief in a better afterlife. They carried the message of resistance and the hope of freedom. Greensboro councilwoman and 'Song' Storyteller T. Dianne Bellamy-Small presents an inspirational performance of black spirituals of the 19th century. She will be joined by accompanist Sheryl McAdoo. Reverend Dr. Arnetta Beverly of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church will explain the history behind the music of the 19th century that led to modern Gospel, R&B and Jazz. Edwin Gil will unveil his new art series, Positive Art-A Benefit With Heart, as part of a charity benefit for Triad Health Project (THP) on Thursday, 2/11 from 6:00 to 9:00pm at Studio B. A collaborative effort among Edwin Gil, THP and Qué Pasa Media Network seeking to communicate the importance of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention through art. Located at 520 S. Elm Street. Spirit Horses featuring the watercolors of Vicki Johnson at Winter Light Gallery and Art Studio now through 2/28. Johnson's current show is a collection of colorful horse watercolors. Her work covers mix media and a wide range of subject matter and studies include Western Carolina and classes/workshops with national and internationally known instructors. Disambiguation, The Informall Theater Company and Shape Shifters joined forces to present an evening of dance, theater and performance improvisation as part of the 8th annual Greensboro Fringe Festival. Performances run from Thursday to Saturday, 2/04-2/06 at the City Arts Studio Theater, Greensboro Cultural Center. Included are new works by Christine Kiernan Fisher, Meg Ralston-Asumendi, and Camerin Allgood McKinnon, a new comedy by I.T.C. artistic director Todd Fisher, and a collaborative performance improvisation by I.T.C. and Shape Shifters titled Attenuation/Disambiguation. The Life and Times of Fannie Lou Hamer at the UpStage Cabaret at Triad Stage from Thursday to Saturday, 2/04-2/06 at 8:00pm. The Touring Theatre of North Carolina hosts a 70 minute theatre documentary about the life of the famed civil rights activist from Mississippi. Post performance discussion to follow with professional cast and moderator, Dr. S. Charmaine Mckissick Melton, daughter of the late Reverend Floyd McKissick.
