·    8:00am–9:00am | Public Program & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

   International Civil Rights Center & Museum

   Corner of February One Place and South Elm Street (free event). The main public entrance will be at the intersection of South Elm and Washington Streets and will open at 6:00am. Rain or shine.

 

·    12:00pm | Commemorative Student March from Campus

   February One monument (NC A&T State University campus) to Phil G. McDonald Plaza in Downtown Greensboro

 

·    1:00pm to 2:00pm | Program

STREET CLOSURES AND PARKING on Sunday-Monday, 1/31-2/1. The Downtown area will experience heavy traffic and congestion beginning Sunday, 1/31 through mid-afternoon on Monday, 2/1 as a result of the scheduled grand opening of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum.

PUBLIC PARKING AND ALTERNATIVE PARKING Three alternative parking locations for Downtown workers and visitors traveling into the center city on Monday, February 1 for the highly-anticipated grand opening and 50th anniversary events for the International Civil Rights Center & Museum. 2010 Greensboro Fringe Festival takes place in Downtown Greensboro from 1/28 to 2/14. The only festival of its kind in the Triad, the 8th annual event presents over 25 new works for the stage showcasing local artists hosted by Greensboro Playwrights' Forum, Informal Theatre Co., and the John Gamble Dance Co. This week includes:

Song Of The Siren, the festival opens on Thursday, 1/28 at 8:00pm at The Broach Theatre. A new original work Sultry Sirens and an awe-inspiring Odysseus offer tales of his great wanderings through narration, classical and world-beat music & tribal-inspired dance. Exotic costuming and elements of body paint transport viewers to ancient mythical lands. All seats $10 general admission. Located at 520 S. Elm Street.

The Box by Larry Brenner from Saturday-Monday, 1/30-2/01 at 8:00pm at City Arts Studio Theatre at the Greensboro Cultural Center. The Final Word Performing Arts Company presents new work; a man, his son, and an unopened box. Toss in God and the Devil and you’ve got the makings of one heck of a Pandora’s conundrum. Tickets $10. Located at 200 N. Davie Street.

James Gregory, Comedian at The Carolina Theatre on Friday, 1/29 at 8:00pm. Enjoy whimsical reflections on life from the front porch and unique humor that packs the crowds into his sold-out shows. The absence of vulgarity sets James Gregory apart and his stories are a carefully-crafted art. The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln at the Greensboro Historical Museum on Sunday, 1/31 at 3:00pm. Participate in discussion led by Bill Moore, retired director of the museum. A part of the "Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation" touring exhibit and community wide programs of Jackson Library at UNC Greensboro. No charge, space is limited; reservations are recommended. Located at 130 Summit Ave.

Martha Graham Workshop with Elizabeth Auclair Saturday and Sunday, 1/30 to 1/31 from 3:30-5:30pm at the Greensboro Cultural Center.  Former Martha Graham Principle dancer Elizabeth Auclair will teach a two-day introduction to the Graham Technique. Civil Rights Film Series at the Central Library from 2/01-2/03 at 7:00pm, free and open to the public:

 

·   2/01, Mon: February One (60 minutes) documentary of the four NC A&T students and the event of the lunch counter sit-ins.

 

·    2/02, Tue: Standing On My Sisters’ Shoulders (60 minutes) documentary on the largely untold story of civil rights contributions made by three Mississippi women Unita Blackwell, Flonzie Brown-Wright, and Mae Bertha Carter.

 

·    2/03, Wed: Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power (53 minutes) documents the life and times of political activist Robert F. Williams from his childhood in Monroe, NC to his self exile and return to the U.S.

Town Hall meeting and panel discussion of the 1960s Sit-Ins and their continued relevance in the 21st century. Free Admission. The Life and Times of Fannie Lou Hamer, at the UpStage Cabaret at Triad Stage from 2/04 to 2/06 at 8:00pm. The Touring Theatre of North Carolina hosts a 70 minute theatre documentary about the life of the famed civil rights activist from Mississippi. Post performance discussion to follow with professional cast and moderator, Dr. S. Charmaine Mckissick Melton, daughter of the late Reverend Floyd McKissick. Fincastles Diner celebrates the third annual Mardi Gras menu that will be available for two weeks from Tuesday-Tuesday, 2/02 to 2/16 and features Fincastles favorites.  Enjoy a variety of gumbos (chicken and sausage, quail and pheasant, and creole seafood), jambalaya, etouffees, red beans and rice, as well as a variety of Po'boys (roast beef, shrimp, oyster, bar-b-que shrimp, crawfish) shrimp with fried green tomatoes and much more. For dessert, white chocolate bourbon pecan bread pudding and a new Bananas Foster bread pudding is added to the menu.
