The Eastern Music Festival draws outstanding faculty, distinguished guest artists and talented youth from all over world to Greensboro.  The Festival also produces a popular Eastern Music Festival fringe Series of alternative programming with everything from Americana to alt country, blues, jazz and gospel.  The series will feature a total of 12 performances over the festival’s 5-week duration. The EMF fringe performances will be held downtown at Triad Stage, 232 S. Elm Street as follows:

EMF fringe Series for Kids, Shana Banana is a multi-award winning Florida singer/songwriter, whose dual careers embrace both national caliber children's musical entertainment as well as remarkable acoustic folk/blues/jazz music. Chick-Fil-A is NOW OPEN on Saturday’s downtown at 106 N. Elm Street through summer months from 11am to 2pm. Each Saturday will feature a theme, this Saturday 7/19 is SPORTS DAY where kids who are dressed in sports attire ages ten years and under, get a complimentary FREE ice cream. Artist Conversation Series, Friday July 18 8-11pm Elsewhere Collaborative features Chad Eby from Tallahassee, Florida. This visiting artist uses electronics, sensors, and prototyping techniques to create interactive artworks that incorporate sound technologies.  Artist Conversations at Elsewhere feature a different artist or artist group every Friday night at 8pm from June through September at 606 S. Elm Street.

Urban Green Campaign, Saturday, July 19, 2008, join Elsewherians and local community volunteers in building The Hanging Gardens of Greensboro, an eco-park and garden in the public alley behind Elsewhere Artist Collaborative at 606 S. Elm Street from 10am-1pm.

Green Hill’s summer 2008 exhibition, REGROWTH, features nine artists who will present large-scale installations and otherwise substantial groups of works. These works make use of plant imagery as a metaphor for universal cycles of death and renewal. The exhibition will be on display at The Green Hill Center for N.C. Variations offers variety of Vance Garvin's talent at The Blue Diamond and benefit Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test.  His oil painting Low Tide will be offered for silent auction at The Blue Diamond gallery, bids accepted thru July 31.  Artist reception/fundraiser is on Wednesday July 23rd, 6-10pm. Ultimate Comic Challenge round 5 of competition this Friday, July 18.  Dozens of comedians from across North Carolina will compete for the title of the Ultimate Comic and a total of $1000 in prize money. In addition, the finalists will be invited to participate in a special stand-up comedy night in the Fall, which will feature the winner, the Ultimate Comic.  All shows will be at 10pm on Fridays at the Idiot Box, seating is limited and reservations strongly recommended. The final is July 25. Honey Bun Boutique

 

 

The Honey Bun Boutique recently opened downtown at 219 Summit Avenue and carries plus size sizes for women.   Owner, Rosalyn Womack’s carries Kiyonna, Band Lu, and Igigi brands and her own private label.  You can also find handmade jewelry and handbags.

Bijan’s Salon moved to 121-B McGee Street from W. Market Street. Owner, Deb Shaw opened small intimate salon at Hamburger Square where walk-in’s are welcome.  She has cut hair in New York and around the world and has even styled for the celebrities.

The Greensboro Merchants Association will host Center City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 5 from 7:45 to 9:00am, 225 Commerce Place.  This council meets every other month at a breakfast forum to bring local government officials, city departments, preservationists, development organizations, and downtown business people together for information sharing and support. SynerG in the Park! Wednesday, July 30, synerG will be making the most of this summer by enjoying lunch the last Wednesday of every month in Center City Park as a part of their Weekly Wednesday series! Public Hearing: Proposed Lee St. and MLK, Jr. Dr. Ramp Closure/Removal

GDOT and the Greensboro Housing and Community Development Department will host a public hearing on Monday, July 20, 2008, in the New Zion Resource Center located at 414 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.  An open house informational session will precede the hearing from 5:30pm until 6:30pm.  The public hearing will begin at 6:30pm.
